Hi George, sorry to hear about the situation.
I suggest you repair your AVG and check if that fixes the issue.
Here is an article with the steps to repair your AVG: http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG
Thank you for letting me wake up to a solution, after the problem had kept me up 3 hours past usual bedtime. I followed your suggestion, and have just completed a full scan – more relief.
FWIW: before shutting down for the night I found that even after doing the suggested way to disable Windows Defender, I was getting shot down again. Went back to be sure I'd followed those suggestions correctly, and saw something I'd missed: apparently, such a disabling is good only until the next Restart. (I had done one of those after following the procedure.) I also found that, even though I scrupulously took the exact steps I'd taken before, when I got to the tab that showed the 2 services and their on/off toggles, that could not be found. ???
Thank you for understanding, Scott.
We are always there to resolve any issues with AVG.
Have a nice day!

Thanks, Alan. Didn't know the morphing history but did know it's the new protection for Windows 10. Still puzzled over why this started happening recently; pretty sure Defender was in place quite a while as BOTH my virus programs were working, apparently not interfering with each other. Then, on my 2nd User area I started having to use Task Manager to shut down MWB, after which AVG would open as usual. And finally, last night, seems Defender became Dictator. But with you folks there to protect low-tech me from my own bad self, pretty sure I'll keep muddling through. Thanks again, to all of you.
Thank you for the information, George.
If you have further queries do let us know.
No prompt, apparently went back to Windows Defender on my reboot. I run 2 Users here, so re-booted again and opened the 2nd. Got the same refusal reasons as previously but this time when I hit Fix, it said there's an upgrade available and I tapped on that. But after 25 minutes watching the time icon swirl I shut it down, switched to original User. There I also got 'upgrade available' but different presentation – and when I ran it, it went through as quickly as AVG things usually do. Now running a scan on this one, then will try the other User again to see if they're in synch.
In general when another antivirus is active on your computer, windows defender will automatically turn off.
If the other antivirus program is inactive or disabled or uninstalled then windows defender will turn on automatically.
Do you mean that you still get the prompt to turn on windows defender?
Scott, Windows Defender… It was first released as a free antispyware program download for Windows XP, shipped with Windows Vista and Windows 7 and made into a full antivirus program replacing Microsoft Security Essentials as part of Windows 8 and later versions. Since it will conflict with AVG during the installation process Windows Defender will be auto-disabled.
