Getting error when reinstalling AVG on Mac

I was having problems getting AVG to update, as it would download the files, then gave an error that updates failed to install.   I uninstalled AVG, downloaded the latest version from the AVG site, and when it starts the install process, the following error occurs:

Virus definitions download has failed! 
The file “avgInstaller” couldn’t be saved in the folder “tmp”.

Any suggestions?
