Well, I was reluctant to reset Chrome at the moment (due to losing extensions, etc.) so I made sure AVG was fully updated and restarted computer. Problem seemed gone but came back after some time.
It interrupts my work each time it increments which was inconvenient so I decided to close Chrome and work from Firefox.
All was well for a couple of hours until I started to get the same Botnet “Threat Secured” popups–this time showing Firefox. So, here are the details for Firefox. Help w/b appreciated

Over 200 Threats Secured by AVG but they keep coming. I think something stuck in Chrome:
URL: Botnet
ap.lijit.com…
Program Files – Chrome.exe
detected by web shield
connection aborted
How do I stop this thing from incrementing?

This isn't the experience we want you to have, Paul.
Upon checking the screenshot, we see that a process running in the background is attempting to access internet through Chrome.
Hence, AVG is notifying you about it randomly. In this regard, we'd suggest you to try resetting Chrome browser once.
Additionally, please ensure that the AVG program has the latest patches applied to it & let us know the outcome.
Open AVG program - click on refresh icon beside virus definitions, at bottom right corner - Restart computer after successful update & check.
Appreciate your efforts in working towards fixing the issue, Paul.
Please check the extensions installed on both the browsers to check if there is any identical extension.
If so, plesae remove it & check. If not, you may need to reset the browsers.

Really frustrating because it sometimes pops up in the middle of my work. Otherwise, it just increments continuously until I reset and then it starts the count over.
What I still need to do is to leave the computer up and close Chrome to see whether it continues incrementing or not.
