Well it's a 6-year-old Vista PC, no multi boot etc. After researching this, I booted into Windows Recovery Environment, selected Command Prompt and ran this command:
Bootrec.exe/FixMbr
The PC still boots, and GMER no longer reports unknown MBR code, so I consider the question solved - but I'm still not sure if there was any real reason to ask it.
I have no AVG detections or any real reason to be suspicious, but ran a GMER scan and it reported "unknown MBR code." It does not have any obvious indications of a rootkit (e.g. <— ROOTKIT ! ! ! as sometimes seen in GMER results). I will upload or paste the entire result if requested. Meanwhile I will continue to research this issue, but I'm not particularly alarmed about this. Will run AVG Rescue CD if an AVG employee recommends it.

Hi Bruce,
In past it was, but with new computers it is not always true.
In any case rewriting MBR should do any harm (if you don't use altered MBR for reason like encrypted hard drive, multi boot, etc).
Thanks
