Most of the websites offering solutions are front ends for promoting the purchase of tools to fix the problem.

The above site depicts the screenshots similar to those I experienced.
I attempted to follow the removal instructions from such sites but there did not seem to be a resolution. I started using Ad Block and the problem has disappeared.
I remain interested in whether AVG is useful in dealing with this problem, AND any reliable source of how best to deal with this pesky problem.

We appreciate your efforts in helping us with the web link, which provided a better clarity. Regarding these website, your conclusion is correct. There are many 3rd party technical support, who sells their product in such a way.
However, this issue might occur due to unwanted applications, extensions installed on your browser/computer without your knowledge.
We can try running a 'Deep scan' in AVG Internet Security after enabling the scan for potentially unwanted applications.
To enable : Open AVG Internet Security - Menu - Settings - General - Enable 'Scan for PUA' by checking it - Ok.
To run deep scan : Open AVG - Click on gear icon beside 'Scan computer' in the homepage & click on Deep scan.
