Please make sure there are no conflicting antivirus installed on your PC.
In general, the performance depends on many factors (OS type and version, HW configuration, other running applications, virus scan in progress etc.).
Regarding the Password protection component, it is confirmed as a bug and a complete reinstallation of AVG would resolve this.
Click this link for instructions to remove AVG completely.
Then, install it as per the steps in this article.
I am having to continually run deep scans and boot time scans due to my computer slowing down and shutting down, I am not shure that AVG is working correctly?
Every startup I have to reset the password protection as is always switched off (not by Me), what is going wrong with avg
