Hibernating apps

AVG tells me I have too many apps running in the background and suggests I hibernate them which include, Google,  email and others, how does hibernating work please?

Hello Ruth,

Please be informed that In the Slowdown severity area you can see how much each of these programs affects your system performance. Finally, if you want to take some action, use the Sleep button or Ignore link to the right. Clicking the Sleep button simply disables a program – it is moved to the "Sleeping programs" list and doesn't slow your system down anymore. If you wish to put all demanding programs running in the background to sleep, you can do so by clicking the Put all to sleep link. On the other hand, you want to keep some program running (even though it consumes system resources), you can click the Ignore link and move it to "Ignored programs" list – programs in this list are no longer considered as "performance consuming".

The disabling option in available in Speed Up Tile.
