After trying the solutions posted here I kept trying and found that what was making AVG display that floating button in my case was the Malware Uninstaller shortcut
I disabled it as follows: Settings > Accesibility > Malware Uninstaller (AVG) > Malware Uninstaller (AVG) shortcut. Once turned off, the button dissapeared.

The original question was referring to the Accessibility Button that AVG adds. To turn it off, go to Settings, then Accessibility, then select AVG AntiVirus. Then turn off the AVG AntiVirus shortcut.

I have found a solution to remove the permanent notification (the small flag icon) in the top corner of your phone screen. Go to your phone settings (the cog icon), select apps, go to the AVG antivirus app, scroll down and select 'notifications.' The top button should be checked and say 'Show Notifications'. Scroll down until you see the 'Permanent' tab and uncheck it. The flag/icon should now disappear on your android.

I cannot believe that after this person made the question perfectly clear you then told them you couldn't answer it and pointed them to another person to have to go deal with. I had the exact same question too
I think I was not making myself clear. The small icon I was referring to is on my smartphone home page and is in addition to the normal AVG icon. As such I am unable to take a screenshot. It is a smaller diameter version of the normal AVG icon on a light coloured "D" shaped background. If moved away from the edge, on release it springs back to the edge. If tapped a "beep" sound is heard,but there does not seem to be any activity. It cannot be removed in the way normal icons can, it just springs back to the side.
Pretty horrible support, if you ask me. I had the same thing happen and had to uninstall the app, then reinstall it. When I reinstalled it, I didn't allow it to give me notifications, thereby keeping that notification icon from appearing. Terrible coding for such a good app.
