Chris Edwards quote 'One of the other most annoying things are the pop-ups telling me Firefox (or even Internet Explorer) is using a lot of memory'
Chris, This is covered in the User Manual. Also it was dealt with on AVG 2012. Have a look @ Weekly Overview: 45/2011… AVG Advisor (http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=179706). With AVG 2014 in Appearance it's now AVG Advisor notifications.

Not "at any time it chooses," updates occur every 12 hours, which seems to be AVG's definition of "automatic." Disabling the task might prove even more irritating.
Hi Connor,
Actually it is every 12 hours only if it is not automatic based on release time.
Btw you can always use older version if you prefer schedule updates.
Thanks
This issue is the same with my 2015 AVG Free. It is pointless and irritating that AVG requires me to pay to simply schedule a defintion update. I too suffer a tremdous sag on CPU efficiency when AVG Free updates defintions at any time it chooses. So, the solution appprently is to unclick, Enable this task, for the Defintion Update Schedule. Then, when I am not using my Dell Vostro, I'm required to open AVG Free and then Enable it.
Actually John, disabling it isn't even more irritating. The Yellow triangle on the tray icon thankfully no longer appears with the task not enabled, you just get the big red warning "You are not fully protected!" when you open AVG which you can ignore. Also for Laurent, you don't have to re-enable it, just click on "Protection is up-to-date" as mentioned previously by Bruce.
However, if you leave the "Program Update Schedule" enabled at a time of your choosing, you get a definitions update as well as a program update if there is one.
What is much more irritating these days however is AVG's own MEMORY LEAKAGE at the end of any update, it doesn't matter whether it was automatic, scheduled or manual, I get between 150-200MB of leakage.
As soon as I get time for the ramifications of removing AVG from this machine (the time taken to uninstall and make sure the machine is clean of it, and install another product) it will be going. I don't have it on my other machine.and I no longer recommend it to my friends or colleagues.
Whilst I appreciate Alan is trying to help, I laughed and couldn't be bothered to respond to his last post here - I thought it was pretty clear and obvious - I DON'T want to disable ALL pop-up notifications, just the memory usage one as I can't customise it to my own value, but in any event it's now a real joke with AVG Update's own memory leakage.
Also the 2 recent New Reply notifications to this thread that I've received, give a link that doesn't come to this thread (just a general support page) because the middle part of the link is wrong (I had to use one of my old links).
I think this is a further indicator of how poor AVG has become.
I also noticed when trying to move around the old forum, main links just redirect to the new Support page, pretty useless whn you are trying to find/look up something "historic" without a direct item link.
After many years AVG, it will be goodbye.
"…maybe Bruce may want to use it to!"
I've taken the survey about 3 times since AVG 2014 came out, but thanks anyway.
Chris, If it's a problem you could always try this… In the AVG Schedule Advanced Settings ( User Interface->Options) for Definition Update Schedule & Program Update Schedule you could disable 'Run when computer starts up if task has been missed'.

Chris, You're obviously not an happy camper! Have a look @ this link (http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-forums.tpl-stdfull?sec=thread&act=show&id=435) & please complete the feedback.
