I have spam in my inbox because avast was disabled. I've re-enabled it, but there is spam in my inbox that I think should be caught. How do I manually start a scan of my inbox?

Please note that Spam is different from virus. If you have a virus in your email attachment, AVG can run a scan and remove it. If it is a spam, it can not be detected once it has entered your inbox. We suggest you not to disable AVG in future to protect your PC from spammers.
Now, please go ahead and manually mark the spam emails as Spam in your Outlook program.
