'sorry. After posting my question, I figured it out. After the initial AVG Antivirus install, you get a screen saying "You're Protected"… you have to go through a few more sales pitches, then click on "install AVG on other devices." I never did this since I didn't want to install on other devices!
But, once you say "yes" you are finally granted access to the Basic AVG settings screen. You'll never see this screen until you say "install on other devices." Rather misleading.
