Dex, just a minute.
Please click on "settings" available in "AVG Sensitive data shield" window as shown in the below image:
On the Settings screen, you can specify which applications and users can access your files.
Check whether by changing the settings, helps the particular file to get identified during the scan.
Keep us informed about the status.
Hello Dex and Steve,
The AVG Datasafe not showing up issue will be fixed in next AVG Internet Security 18.5 version updates.
In mean time, you can follow the below work around to install AVG Data Safe.
- Uninstall version AVG Internet Security 18.4 from control panel > program and features.
- Restart your computer once.
- Install AVG Internet Security 18.3 version from offline file (x64): https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/18-3-avg_internet_security_setup_offline.exe
- Choose custom installation – check Data Safe
- Right after the installation, go to Privacy section and create new Data Safe (should be worked without restart).
Regards,
Alok.
I'm with Dex on this, data safe was a very useful feature and I got the message to say it's run its course and will be disabled soon
So I have moved my files out and deleted the safe and tried to make sense of the new data shield
Like Dex I have many file types and even scans or pictures all I get when I run the scan app is for files it recogonises
Worse still I gave up and went back in later and all I have is create the old data safe menu
This is a mess and leaves us un protected

But, what if it doesnt fall under that category, yet I still don't want it to be snooped on? like Intellectual Property?
I used the data safe, but now that it's leaving how can I have an encrypted place to put files I don't want people getting to?
I can't seem to use the sensitive data shield to pick files that I want protected.
So now what do I do?
Dex,
I have read through the conversations, Mr. Bala had escalated the case and we have received a reply from our senior team. They suggested you to install the older version and use the Data safe feature. Since the data safe has been removed and no updates will be released for that. To protect files using the Sensitive Data Shield, please refer this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Sensitive-Data-Shield-Getting-Started
I understand the situation.
Let me check with my senior team whether there are possibilities to get this done.
Keep checking this post to know about the status.
Your patience is much appreciated.
Thanks for the effort, Balasubramanian,
I'm not sure if doing something wrong in the settings or not, but the only functionality I have in the settings window is to toggle the "Senstive Data Shield" switch at the top and check/uncheck the box next to "Restrict document access to this Windows account".
Other than those two customization tools, I'm not able to specify "blocked apps" or "allowed apps". It's simply static. Everytime I run a scan it brings up the came chosen files to protect that it has chosen since the very first scan I've initiated. It seems to be pulling from the same location: "My documents" and no where else. It also doesn't seem to pick up everything that would be considered sensitive in that location either, like my W2's for example.
Unfortunate,
Is there any plans on having the Sensitive Data Shield be manipulated to target specific files, instead of hoping for it to know what you'd like protected?
Or is it possible to manipulate files to be caught by the Sensitive Data Shield? Example: Keywords in the name of the file or body of text (If applicable)?
Or are we stuck with whatever the Sensitive Data Shield decides to protect and that's it?
Also, reverting to an older version of AVG for the Data Safe feature, would mean having an outdated virus/ maleware dictionary, correct? Would this not compromise my computer's overall safety?
But, what if it doesnt fall under that category, yet I still don't want it to be snooped on? like Intellectual Property?
Bhuvaneswari Vairavan,
I appreciate the recommendation, however I do not need to restore my files. I have been able to pull them from the data safe successfully after the newst update to AVG.
Please read through the rest of the thread to possibly answer the main topic at hand. Balasubramanian was going to consult the team, however he never got back to me about how to control the Sensitive Data Shield. As of right now it is very unintuitive, compared to the datasafe. Please refer to the earlier posts of the thread to understand the dynamic of my question/ situation: How do I protect files using the Sensitive Data Shield? I cannot control what files it chooses.
Well, can you change the type of file to the category for it to be detected by AVG sensitive data shield?
Dex,
The Data safe feature has been discontinued and it will not updated in the future version as well. I would suggest you to backup the data safe files/ restore it and then update the program to the new version 18.4 manually and use the new Sensitive data shield feature.
