I am sorry to hear that. You can follow the steps in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG to uninstall the older version using remover tool. Don't restart your computer after you are done with the removal tool.

Download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe. This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.
Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No" (we cannot recommend use the tool in safe mode, because there is a problem with compability)
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer".
After restarting your computer, please click the link http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Download-and-install-AVG-AntiVirus-Free to install the latest AVG Antivirus free.

I truly understand your urgency on this matter and appreciate your patience.
It is recommended to uninstall AVG Antivirus on Mac by opening "AVG AntiVirus" from the top navigation bar and select "Uninstall AVG AntiVirus. This step is mentioned in the article provided before (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac) . This is the correct way how to uninstall it. It can't be removed by moving it to the Trash.
Please let us know whether you have followed this correct step, hence we can proceed further.

AVG runs for HOURS then it quits at 73% through the scannng process. I have tried to download a new AVG but it says I al ready have AVG. ow do I uninstall?

Oh! Sorry I didn't know that you are using the MAC device. Please follow the instructions given in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac to uninstall AVG in your MAC.

If it fails, please uninstall AVG older versions manually by navigating to the location " Open Finder > Applications > right click on AVG AntiVirus.app > select Show package contents > open Contents folder > double click on Uninstaller.app".

AVG 2017 version:
Run uninstallation from /Library/Application Support/AVGAntivirus/components/uninstall/com.avg.uninstall.app

The reason I am feeling some urgency is that I had a malware event 2 days ago… ran AVG to make sure it did not leave me with some corrupted files, and this is where the problems began. The software (AVG) would run for many hours… get to 75% and then quit showing it had located 2 bad files. This is why I am concerned and would like to get AVG working again. Many thanks for all of your assistance.

it tells me AVG is running, I have quit the application, closed all of the windows and it will not let me put it in the trash…

Caron, Thank you for sharing the screenshot. Please check if you have AVG setup file downloaded in the desktop. If yes, please delete the setup file and then try to remove AVG program from Application folder. Check if this works good for us.
