Opening email should be safe enough, just make sure to don't click on any links.

Ben… if you right-click on the unopened email (in 'Live', Aol, hotmail, gmail… all of them I can think of) a list should show up, with the bottom choice (usually*) being "Message Source". If you click on the message source it should open a new window, No* url.anything*, that will show you the email's header, sender, IP address… all kinds of information… safely.
You will find the sender's address in there somewhere.

AVG recently found the l-worm/swen.a malware on our computer. It shows that it was located in the windows live mail folder. I would like to find out who sent it but don't want to open the email. Is there a safe way to get this information?
We're using windows 7 business on a dell optiplex 620 computer.
