How to pay with a credit note?

Not sure if I understand it well, but a credit note is just confirmation that money was send back to your account(card, etc).

I have a credit note and would like to part pay with it. Had to cancel a license due to my laptop  breaking and now got a new laptop and it needs protecting. Please help.
