How to recover files from quarantine, after AVG was uninstalled as it was causing BlueScreen errors

Regarding the info that you provided:
"Yes, the "Quarantine Folder" is accessible only from AVG interface and it is not accessible from any other location on your computer."
My query: Even if the virus-vault/quarantine folder/file is only accessible from AVG interface and not from anywhere else, but what is the location of that folder/file on the harddisk?

Hello Chinmaey,

We appreciate your patience.

Program data is a hidden folder, please enable it from your Windows.

Refer this article to know more about the hidden folders  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028316/windows-view-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-10.

Chinmaey, if AVG was uninstalled, chest folder is permanently removed. When reinstalling AVG, it is not possible to restore the former chest folder. It might be possible if you have a restore point/backup image of when the original AVG was installed, to be able to access the chest folder and its content.

Chinmae,

The chest folder would be removed automatically when we uninstall the program.
The folder will be created again only when we move some threat to Quarantine from AVG user interface.

After my windows login file were quarantined due to win32: virus, I am unable to login to the system. I connected the same hard disk to another system which has AVG installed. Now how do I restore the quarantined file back. Is there any solution. Pls. help.

Thanks for the info, but my question was also that:
…As I have another computer having windows XP with AVG installed, so could I move the virus vault files to that computer and then restore the original files from there?

I will help you with the necessary information.

Quarantined files are located here: C:\ProgramData\AVG\Antivirus\chest

ProgramData is hidden folder and you may have to enable it in Windows, check this link https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028316/windows-view-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-10 for the steps to on "how to view the hidden folders on your computer".

The data in chest folder are encrypted and it can be restored only from AVG Antivirus app.

I checked out your previous reply and as you said:
Quarantined files are located here: C:\ProgramData\AVG\Antivirus\chest
The data in chest folder are encrypted and it can be restored only from AVG Antivirus app.

I made a check in my computer and found that no folder by the name 'Antivirus' is present in the 'AVG' folder, however a folder by the name 'Antivirus' is present in the 'Persistent data' folder but the folder named 'chest' is nowhere to be found in the 'AVG' folder.

Note: I don't have AVG installed currently.

I will help you with the necessary information.

Hello Rafeeq,

This seems to be unusual. Let us have a look into this together,

Are you able to boot up your PC in safemode as mentioned here (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=AVG-Restart-Windows-Safe-Mode)? Once you log into your PC, please perform a system restore to a previous point when your device was working fine.

Keep us updated to proceed further.

I am having this same issue and am not able to do a goddamn system restore due to the file being quarantined. Help me urgently please.

Some time ago I had installed AVG, but unfortunately I had to remove it as it had started causing Blue-screen errors in my computer running Windows 10. But after uninstalling, I remembered that I had not restored the files from the quarantine. As I have another computer having windows XP with AVG installed, so could I move the virus vault files to that computer and then restore the  original files from there?

Thank you for checking that, Chinmaey.
Let me inform this to our senior team and inquire whether the chest folder will be removed when AVG is uninstalled.
Keep checking this post to know about the status. Your patience is much appreciated.

You are most welcome.
Answer for [Q1]: You can find the Quarantine under "Menu" option of AVG Antivirus/Internet Security latest version. The quarantined files will be available within the AVG folder which will be available under "Program Files" by default. However, those files will be of different format and couldn't be used.
Answer for [Q2]: The possibility of recovering the files will be quite less when they are deleted from the AVG virus vault/quarantine.
Feel free to contact us if you need further help.

Thanks, but I have two more questions:
[Q1.] In my current computer which is having windows 10, where is the virus vault/quarantine located? And, is the location of virus vault/quarantine different with different versions of windows?

[Q2.] When I had AVG previously installed, I noticed that AVG automatically deleted the files that were in virus vault/quarantine. So, if AVG deletes files from the virus vault/quarantine also, then can we recover them from a file recovery software?

Hi Matt,

We will help you in this.
Kindly refer this article and remove those files from the Quarantine and check if you are able to System Restore.
