How to recover many photos deleted as a result of a AVG "clutter" scan/delete

Hi Simon,

We're afraid as the files removed using the Clutter option cannot be restored. 
AVG program would provide you a caution/disclaimer when cleaning the detected files. It is recommended to review the files that are detected during the scan, before fixing them. We're sorry to know that they've been removed.

Macbook Pro 2017 OS 11.6 ( with current AVG AntiVirus subscription)
Today's AVG scan offered to clear much "cutter" which I accepted but soon found that the result was thousands of JPEGS from my Photos app had disappeared. This was not intended!!
Please advise me where they have gone and how to recover them.
