Safesurf.net highjacks your web browser and then gives pop-up advertisements and redirect Web browser activity. A full scan does not find this but a web search indicates it's been around for a while. What is the safest way to remove this from my system and why did AVG not detect it?

Greg, suggest you clear the temporary internet files in your browser and then download and run free malwarebytes from the following link:
