I am getting "Updating Virus Definitions"

Hi Uploaded AVG Free version. It has been "updating virus definitions" for the last 6 hrs. My Laptop is unusable. Files and programs don't open, browser don't open. I unable to uninstall as this doesn't work wither. Please advise. Thanks

Thank you for contacting us. Could you let us know which AVG product are you using and do you receive any error message when trying to update? Please also be informed that AVG latest version will automatically check for updates and install them to improve your security. Thank you.

It says "Updating Virus Definitions" To fully protect this computer AVG is updating its definitions. This has been going on for some time now and I am not sure if its doing anything or what. Has anyone else have this happened?
