Ian, Have a look @ this article (https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=What-to-do-when-AVG-installation-is-failing). When you uninstalled & reinstalled did you use the AVG total removal tool plus either the 32 or 64bit install file, whichever suits your system. Not sure about 32 or 64 bit on your system have a look @ this link (http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=140471#post_140471).

and I get this message each time, I have unistalled and reinstalled but still come up with this message.

Error Message:

Installation failed.

Severity: Error
Error Code: 0xc0070643
Error Message: General Internel error.
Additional message: MSI Engine: Faled to initialize the package
@AVGMSI_Error 27055
Installation failed. (0xE0010001)
Contect: Intialization, MSI action failed
