Hello Nigel. I would like to let you know that AVG is designed in such a way that it doesn't work together when other antivirus products are installed. Also it is highly recommended to use only any one antivirus product in your system as you may encounter severe conflicting issues. Thank you.

Hello Nigel.
Unfortunately, it is not supported to have AVG only as on demand scanner. Thank you.

Hi All,

I would like to use comodo for my firewall and realtime protection duties and have AVG installed but not active at all. The only time I would want AVG to run would be when I wanted to do a scan for viruses on my hard drive.

It seems this is impossible however as AVG programs persist in starting even when their services are deactivated in the AVG manager/console. I have done a fair bit of searching on this and have also tried disabling self protection and deleted startup entries but still it runs.

My question is, is it possible to simply use AVG as a simple 'on demand' virus scanner without all the other stuff that comes with it? And if not, can you suggest some software that offers that functionality?

I've always used several antivirus programs in combination because what one misses the other catches and vice versa but it's looking like you can't do that anymore, every software manufacturer has to have a 'suite' of services and they want you to use everything all the time.

This is something I used to be able to do with AVG, is this behaviour obsolete?

Thanks Alan, that dropdown is in a weird place although I did get a notification when you replied so I guess I'm already following this topic.

Still looking for an answer

And this system of support is not great, it would be far preferable to have a forum where you could track your posts. I'm having to search through a list of questions to find this post and see no way to 'subscribe' to this post.

Thanks for the reply Kishore although you've avoided answering any of my questions.

Naturally it wouldn't be ideal running several 'active scanning' services on a machine, that is why I would only want avg to run as a virus scanner (this is how the program began its life), and only run when I opened it and told it to do a scan.

So I return to my original query, is this behaviour now obsolete?

eg: If you want to have AVG installed on your machine it MUST be running at all times even if you disable the services in the UI and you MUST use active scanning. If AVG can no longer serve as a simple virus scanning tool then I will have to look for other alternatives that offer this functionality.
