I recently purchased AVG Ultimate. Since then AVG Safe Surf has not worked on either of my PCs. I am currently working with AVG support to try to fix this. It has been escalated again and is taking a long time to fix. Also, I am getting ongoing and annoying pop up advertisements asking me to install and purchase AVG Safe Surf from, I assume AVG Ulitimate; but I already own it on both PCs. All of the above is not the sign of quality products and service.
Checked out Silent Mode and decided not to use it.

The SPAM will continue and has done so for quite a while now, I don't see a fix coming soon.

I regret for the inconvenience caused. If you are using the latest 2017 version of AVG program, then please be informed that we are working on a major update to find and implement the best option for AVG Marketing popups. This process will take time but we assure you that it will be done as soon as possible.
However, you can try changing the duration for AVG popups from the settings. This will only limit the duration of campaign popups appearance.
Open AVG interface, click on Menu–>Settings.
On General window, right side you can find Popups, please click on arrow next to it.
It will show you the option to setup duration for all popups.
Please setup duration "0" for information popups alone.
