I searched the console this morning and found a process "com.symantec.mes.systemextension" was still active even after using all of the Norton uninstall methods and tools. I found the following information which worked perfectly and I was able to install AVG:
https://community.norton.com/en/forums/how-remove-comsymantecmssystemextension-mac-os
Enable / Disable SIP
Follow these steps to disable SIP:
1. Restart your Mac.
2. Before OS X starts up, hold down Command-R and keep it held down until you see an Apple icon and a progress bar. Release. This boots you into Recovery.
3. From the Utilities menu, select Terminal.
4. At the prompt type exactly the following and then press Return: csrutil disable
5. Terminal should display a message that SIP was disabled.
6. From the menu, select Restart.
You can re-enable SIP by following the above steps, but using csrutil enable instead.
First, you need to log into recovery mode and turn off SPI via terminal: csrutil disable
Restart
Then, use systemextensionsctl from terminal. Use the list parameter and then the uninstall one with the parameters retrieved from running it with list. Looked like this on my system: systemextensionsctl uninstall 9PTGMPNXZ2 com.symantec.mes.systemextension;
Then, back into recovery mode to turn SPI back on and run csrutil enable
The extension is now completley gone from your system.
Also, if you want to confirm the parameters to use with 'systemextensionsctl uninstall', you can run 'systemextensionsctl list' and look for the com.symantec.mes.systemextension entry. look at the team id - should be the same as the one I posted.
Greetings,
We're glad to help pointing you in the right direction.
Our expertise are limited to AVG. There cannot be multiple security software on the same device.
They would conflict with each other & none would work effectively. Hence, you're prompted about the other software on your MAC.
In order to remove the traces of Norton completely, you may need to reach their support.
Thank you for your understanding in advance!
I've read a couple similar posts but a couple went offline with support without any solutions. Is there an answer to this problem? I've used Nortons uninstaller, the Norton uninstaller script, I disabled SIP to use terminal to delete the "NortonForMac.kext". But I still can't install AVG on a MacBook running Catalina OS. W
Any thoughts?
thank you
