Is there a benefit to removing index.dat files and will it hurt anything. I have a virus that continues to pop up and gets blocked consistently and I'm wondering how if these could trigger it or what I can do to block it. It says I need to update media program, but it shows as a virus and it is annoying as it will pop in and take over the page. I have to close it and reload the page again. Sometimes this reoccurs.
Hello Craig,
I apologize for the inconvenience caused. I have sent you an email with necessary steps to get additional support to fix this issue.
Thank you.
Hello Craig,
We apologize for the inconvenience caused.May I know which AVG product you have installed? May I know does AVG program detect it?The index.dat file is a database file. It is a repository of information such as web URLs, search queries and recently opened filesThe index.dat file is used by Microsoft Internet Explorer 4, 5 and 6 to record information about Internet sites that have been visited and details of cookies. Please feel free to contact us again.
Thank you.
Hi Craig,
I will help you with the issue,
Have you scanned your whole compute using AVG Anti virus ?
Please let us know whether you receive this pop up when you browser internet
Or does it come from your system tray in the desktop ?
AVG One- click maintenance has nothing to do with this,
it must be a malware program trying to download more virus by showing you fake update pop ups .
And when this pop up comes please open Task Manager
and search for any process with name media update or similar name.
Please let us know and we will help you resolve the issue .
Thank you
I was using AVG1-Click Maintenance. I think it is 2015 although it could be 2014. I also have 2014 Tune Up which appears to be included in the Maintenance. I don’t know that this is a real problem, but the Maintenance was noting it as a way to improve performance and I had the triangle with an “!” inside beside this group. It shows over 5000 listed in my computer. I’m wondering if these are like cookies so that a virus could try to follow me as I have this media update popping up that my AVG is stopping and flagging as a virus. It just continues to pop in frequently and I lose the page I’m on when it does. I am hoping to find a way to stop it. Thanks
This occurs when I open a browser window normally. It shows on task manager as an update also. This happens regularly. There was what appeared as an automatic program opening upon start up for this which I turned off when this opportunity came up to speed up my system with AVG. This seemed to stop it for a few days, abut then it returned. I have run malware programs, but this remains a problem. I will attempt to end task thru task manager next time it pops up.
