Hello Carol,
A router can be compromised through an IP address but not the IP address itself. You might look at your router configuration and run the ports tests.
If you have installed AVG Internet Security and it is active on your computer then your computer will be protected from all types of malwares/hackers. However, may I know if you want to reset password of your Router application, what is the exact issue you're experiencing with resetting password?

I contacted Netgear router so I could reset my password to get to the interface. Tech told me that my IP address was compromised. Does my AVG have any root tools for this kind of thing to be detected , or is this possible for someone to hack me in this way?
