d, With Win 8.1 Windows Defender was re-classified to an AntiVirus prog which can conflict with AVG so therefore it's disabled during the AVG installation process.
Windows Defender is an anti-malware component of Microsoft Windows. It was first released as a free antispyware program download for Windows XP, shipped with Windows Vista and Windows 7 and made into a full antivirus program replacing Microsoft Security Essentials as part of Windows 8 and later versions.
Also McAfee should be uninstalled. Download & run the McAfee total removal tool (http://us.mcafee.com/apps/supporttools/mcpr/mcpr.asp).

Hello All,
I used to use AVG on my Win XP.  I now have a Win 8.1 64-bit OS machine, but I cannot get AVG t install.  It appears to download okay, nd then fails with: error code: 0xC0070783, general error 0x0783.

I already happen to have Windows Defender and McAfee Security Scan installed.  Do these cuase a problem?  (McAfee did not on my XP, with AVG installed.)
Any help gratefully receievd.

Thanks. (I must have misread your last post.)

Thanks for your help.  Despite it not being compatible with 64 bit OS (which is surprising as it runs on Win 10, which I think is 64bit), AVG did install - without me doing anything different!  (I haven't yet unnstalled Defender and McAfee.)
I'll have to wiat and see if AVG contimues to run after the 30 day trial, when it should revert to AVG free.
