Installed AVG A/V 2016 - start up slowed to snails pace

Wow… so everything was working perfectly - and then AVG 2016 downloaded an update - and now my machine is back to 3-4 minute startups, all over again.  Unbelievable.

At this stage, I see no option but to completely uninstall this program (and I guess ultimately contact Staples to seek a refund of my purchase, and locate some alternative…).

In the interim, my computer will only allow 'startups' in "SELECTIVE STARTUP" -  this will not accept a change (even under Administrator) /msconfig/selection of 'Normal Startup.'.

Will this change once I've uninstalled the AVG Antivirus 2016?  As you can likely understand, I am quite uncomfortable with even considering any nature of remote assistance now… please advise if you are aware of anything which Remote Assistance did that would have altered my administrator ability to select a 'Normal Startup" versus a 'selective startup'.  Thank you.

Have had AVG (paid) Antivirus 2015/3 user/1 year installed for almost a year; was content.  Paid version was going to expire on June 20th. Yesterday installed 2016 version/3 user/2 year on my Windows 8.1 laptop.  Start up has slowed to a snails pace.  Don't understand why: 1) Activation took an immense download, when my computer was supposedly 'safe' and up to date A/V definitions already?  2) Download kept redirecting to some AVG 'CZ' site?; 3) Why my computer now takes FAR TOO MANY MINUTES to start up, compared to a 1 minute start yesterday?  Any ideas?  Is it that 2016 AVG Antivirus has some problem?

Hello Bobbi,

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.
This is the first time we are hearing this kind of issue.
Do you mean that you got our remote support help and then the normal startup mode got changed?
If yes, please do provide the case reference of the remote support contact so that we can check into the case and assist you better.

Again, you do understand that this is the PAID version of AVG Antivirus 2016, 3 user, 2 years?  I have tried this 'repair'- three times now - to absolutely no avail.

Each and every time I start up my computer, it now takes between 4-5 MINUTES (versus under 30 seconds previously, with PAID AVG Antivirus 2015).  There is something very, very seriously wrong here. I have Windows 8/8.1 - and have NO PLANS to move to Windows 10.  The only other 'change' is that I did download the offered "24 hour"  'free version' - as provided! of the PC Tune up - ran it, accepted the recommendations - then deleted it, as I have no long term interest in that program, after testing it.  One or the other of these two AVG programs has slowed startup on my computer to a snails pace - and it is totally unaccpetable.  Have NEVER had this problem with AVG Antivirus - paid versions (which I've paid for repeatedly over a number of years now).    I'm at my wits end with this… really.

If you look above, in this very same thread, you will find the file numbers - here, I've copied them again (from my 3rd post) for you:  Re:  AVG Customer Care - Request #03453131    [ ref:_00Db0Z3Sf._500b0gVr8p:ref ] & North America phone support case #03476631

Yes, remote support changed both a number of startup items/programs and it appeared that somehow 'normal' startup' had been changed to 'selective startup'.  I know remote support worked on the 'normal startup/selective startup' page - what they changed on that page of msconfig I am uncertain - as had never seen it before remote support pulled it up - that is why I have asked if they changed this to 'selective startup' - because it will not/would not revert to 'normal' startup.

However, after I uninstalled AVG 2016 Antivirus completely (and used the 'AVG remover'), my system now starts up at 45 seconds again, rather than the 3-4-5 minute startups experienced since installing it on June 10th.

Re:  AVG Customer Care - Request #03453131    [ ref:_00Db0Z3Sf._500b0gVr8p:ref ] & North America phone support case #03476631

While doing 'remote' assistance with Kalaivani, trying to resolve the above issues, he disabled a number of my programs from startup - everything except sound, he typed; used some sort of an AVG 'scrub' to remove the hidden remnants of 24 hour free use of AVG PC TUNEUP (while deleted, this did NOT clear off of my computer/toolbars)  then he remotely put my machine into a 'chkdsk'.

I don't know whether he programmed an 'f' or an 'r' chkdsk - didn't say in the conversation, and I didn't see it proceed…but - either way, this is NOT a good thing to do on a computer with a 6G hard drive, with only 10% of the drive even in use (they stall - sometimes for DAYS - at 11%, and this is just hard on the hard drive to continue searching blank sectors, over and over, with the old chkdsk program - chkdsk is NOT designed for Windows 8 & big hard drives.).

When computer continued on restarts to repeatedly try to boot - to the by now aborted chkdsk,- I called the AVG help line in US - to no avail.

They suggested I call my computer manufacturer - or Microsoft - to try to get the NEW problem (of being thrown into chkdsk!) repaired, as well as reactivate some of the disabled start up items.  (Case #03476631 - Oh - btw? - the 800-999-3335 phone number provide by support in North America to reach my computer manufacturer support? That was inaccurate, too… give it a try - some other company answers.)

After many hours of online research - with an alternate machine - I finally completed a full (manufacturers test -NOT chkdsk!) scan of ALL my systems/hard drive/memory/cards/etc - everything working absolutely perfectly - and ultimately overrode the chkdsk command.

Once back into my system - now hours later - I restored the 'disabled' startup items - downloaded a few files that AVG PC Tuneup had recommended deleting, and startup had improved (still not perfect, but improved.)   After more research, I did a 'windows compatibility' test on the 2016 Version of AVG Antivirus - only to find that the file 'AVGGUI' was/is incompatible with my windows 8/8.1 !!

Microsoft compatability troubleshooter suspended that file… and what do you know - now seems to work fine!

SO… if you are looking for a possible 'fix' to delayed (slow as turtle) startups after installing AVG 2016 AntiVirus?  Right click on your AVG icon, and let Microsoft check the compatibility issues on the software… you may have an 'AVGgui' file which is incompatible with your version of Windows  (mine was 8/8.1).

Personally, I could no longer recommend the 'trial' version of AVG PC Tune Up - unless you are a programmer and can identify every file, whether you use them (or desperately need them, or not)  and know how to 'scrub' a program which doesn't like to be deleted from your hard drive…

I have provided this for the AVG Tech crew - up to this point in time, I have been happy with AVG antivirus over the past few years - it seemed to catch most problems, only missing the odd malware (caught by FixMeStick).  However, Remote Techs DO need to know NOT to throw newer computers into 'chkdsk' - either 'f' or 'r' on remote,  and need to check the compatibility of this file issue first and foremost… I will be checking the program immediately on subsequent installs on my additional 2 users.

Oh - and lastly?  DON'T LET OR SUGGEST ANY ONE - EVEN REMOTE ASSISTANCE - RUN OLD FASHIONED PROGRAMS LIKE CHKDSK ON COMPUTERS WITH HUGE HARD DRIVES.  You will still be watching 10-11%, sometimes days later…if you don't believe me, check on any search engine, and will then get to go through trying to 'force' the chkdsk to stop on every restart. Not fun…
