Mark, Could you please advise whether you have installed any other AVG product or any other 3rd party antivirus product on your PC before?. Also bear in mind that with Win 10 Windows Defender is classified as an AntiVirus prog which can conflict with AVG so it should be disabled.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused. Please check for any conflicting anti virus and remove it as suggested by Alan and then run the AVG remover tool to remove all the remnants of the failed installation and re install AVG free using offline installation file based on your OS ( 32 bit or 64 bit).
To run remover tool, please visit http://www.avg.com/tools#tba2 and click on "AVG Remover" to download the remover tool and run it on your PC. It will ask you to select which product you would like to uninstall. Please select "AVG Protection" and follow the setup instructions to uninstall AVG. Once the tool is run, your PC will automatically reboots. After the restart, please check if a folder with name AVG Remover is created under C:\ and remove it.
