Sometimes, this might happen if there are few traces of older version on your computer ot due to network interruptions during the process. In this regard, we'd suggest you to uninstall AVG using AVG Clear to remove the AVG files completely & download, install AVG Free Antivirus using offline installer.
Please try the above step & let us know if it helps.
I'll post a picture later I don't have access to the machine right now but it didn't give a specific error other than an error occurred during setup. And gave me a link to the log.
