Hi Margaret,
I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience caused. This could be caused due to a conflicting version of AVG is already installed or traces of older version AVG present on your PC. I would suggest you to run AVG Clear and AVG Remover tools to completely uninstall AVG and reinstall it. Download and run AVG Clear tool: https://share.avg.com/steam/PSP/AVG2017/AVG_Clear.exe. This tool will help with removing antivirus component of AVG 2017 and its traces.

Open tool
User Account control - click "Yes"
Windows safe mode - click "No"
Choose installed version (AVG Free, AVG Internet Security)
Click "Uninstall"
Click "Restart computer".

After restart, run AVG Remover and remove all other supported products and remnants of AVG (ZEN, Framework,…) as suggested in this article http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-uninstall-AVG .

After the both tools are run successfully, please follow the steps provided below to reinstall AVG Antivirus.

Click on this link http://files-download.avg.com/inst/mp/Antivirus_Free_1817.exe to download AVG Antivirus.
Run the downloaded file to start the installation process.
Choose the 'Basic version' and follow the instructions on your screen to complete the installation.
Open AVG Anti Virus free, click on Menu and select 'About'.
On About page, click on 'Subscription' in the left pane.
Then click on 'Enter license number' to enter your new license number.
The program will update to paid version automatically.
You may have to reboot the PC once to finish the activation.
