Unfortunately, despite disabling AVG I still was unable to access the site.

Clearly it isn’t AVG software preventing access.

I don’t suppose you have any idea of what might be causing the problem and what I might be able to do to overcome it?

Our scope is only limited to AVG, Brian
To double check, only disbale the Web Sheild from the AVG Internet Security and check if you are able to access the internet. 
If that does not help, you can also uninstall and check and do not forget to reinstall after that. 

Other than this, you can check with your ISP regarding this.

I have found problems of being blocked from accessing a number of internet sites. The most recent one which I have found blocked is "https://familysearch.org" which links in to my Family Tree Maker software. When I try to access it directly from Microsoft Edge I find my ïnternet access blocked. When I attempt to login to the site from within the Family Tree Maker software it tells me "no internet access" so it is clearly blocked at that point as well. I have added this site as an exception within AVG but nothing has changed.
Can anyone please suggest where the problem lies and how I can overcome it?
