Internet Explorer failure

I run windows 7 and AVG 2015. Like others I have had a problem with Internet Explorer it will not run and after trying many suggestions it still will not run. Forums have suggested that there is a conflict between AVG and I.E. after an update. One suggestion was to stop the AVG firewall and then turn on I.E. but I should not have to do that, the firewall is there for a reason. Google Chrome works but I prefer I.E. Any ideas
