Laptop with Vista won't go to sleep

I upgraded from AVG basic to a paid AVG Internet Security (10 device package) today. My Toshiba laptop with Vista now has a problem. When I close the lid the computer won't go to sleep, and when I open it the screen won't come back to life! It's just black. I am forced to hold the power button down until the computer shuts down then I have to power it back up again. 
My other devices work fine.

Please help!!
