AVG dashboard says that AVG is out of date, but when I click Update Now the result says that it IS up to date.
However, the same page then says a later version is available and the version numbers bear that out. My installed version is 17.5.3022 - but it says version 17.6.2310 is available.
Why doesn't the auto update, or my manual update, pull down the newer version?
Should I just get the latest download from the AVG website, or will that have problems installing because I already have a version?

I apologize this issue has occurred again. It could be caused due to incomplete installation of update files. I would suggest you to uninstall AVG Internet Security and re install it to resolve the issue.
