Log file config & locations

OK - I think we've somehow gotten off-topic.  I'm not sure why a screenshot of AVG finding a given threat has any bearing on where a log file would be showing AVG finding that threat.  So let me just posit the questions as simply as possible:

1) Does AVG log to a logfile when threats are found and the details about that threat?
2) If yes to 1, then where is that file located?

Thanks.

Hello,

Is the logging function configurable at all in the Mac AV product?  Also, where are the log files stored?  I found some logs in /Library/Logs but was unable to locate any information re: scans or threats that were found during scans.

Thanks.

Hi Tony,
You can find the threat logs and files in Quarantine (Virus Vault) in your AVG Anti-Virus. You can also manage (Remove, immunize and restore) the threat files from Quarantine. Please, feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance.
Thank you.

Hi Gunaseelan,

Thanks for the information and this is indeed unfortunate.  Not being able to access key data such as threat information, location of threats, scan locations, etc. just isn't an option for my security paradigm.  Also, requiring the use of Quarantine doesn't really offer a solution for at least two reasons: (1) Quarantine may not be an action the user wishes to take; and (2) There are some cases where the AVG app is unable to actually perform a quarantine operation.

Specifically in regard to #1, let's say a threat is found in an attachment to a SPAM email and further, this is a Windows only threat.  This would offer no direct risk to the Mac user nor anyone that user interacts with (because it has already been quarantined by the email app) and quarantining that item using AVG  could result in email database corruption.  As you can see, the user would definitely opt to NOT perform any AVG quarantine but because of the app's limitations, they are also unable to access key data about that threat find.

Unfortunately, I will need to unistall AVG but I will periodically check the AVG site to see if a future version is improved with these necessary features.

Thank again for yours and your colleagues help - very much appreciated.

Hello Tony,
We are sorry for the confusion. Unfortunately! There is no option in the current version for MAC to check the log files and scan reports, however our developers are working on it and the option will be added in our upcoming updates. You can check the scan details during the time of scanning (How many items scanned, which areas or location). You can move all the threats to Quarantine to check all the threats, to enable this option, please open AVG Anti-Virus -> Click on option AVG Anti-Virus (At the top left corner) -> Preferences -> General -> Check "Move all threats to Quarantine"
This would move all the threats to Quarantine. Thanks for your understanding. Please, feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance.

Hello Tony,
We are sorry to hear that. Could you please provide us the screenshot of that threat notification to assist better?
Thank you.

Hello and thanks for the infomraiton…

So I have already run a Full Suystem Scan and based on your feedback, I checked the Quaratnine and no logs are present…is there a secondary location that I should check?

Hi Gunaseelan,

So the scan actually found 6500 threats that are mainly spam messages (no issue here) but they are not yet quarantined by the AVG app and because they are emails, I doubt they can be quarantined without corrupting the mail DB.

Also, you menioned "…logs in the Quarantine itself…" which I understand to mean logs relating only to the Quarantine of threats - is this correct?  What I am looking for is log data that shows the details of the scan and the actual discovery of the threats themselves when found.  Does any of this data exist in any log somehwere?

Hello Tony,
We really appreciate your efforts. If there are no threats detected and no infected files, the Quarantine will be empty. There is no secondary location to check, however you can check all the logs in Quarantine itself. Thanks for your understanding. Please, feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance.

OK - so just to confirm - there is no logging of any threats that are found unless the item is quarantined - so nothing showing which areas are scanned, how many items where checked, etc…the only log of anything concerning threats and scans is when a threat is actually quarantined.

Is this correct?

Tony, To take a screenshot in MAC, please follow the below instructions : 1. To capture the entire screen, press Command-Shift-3. The screen shot will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop with the filename starting with “Picture” followed by a number, example Picture 1, Picture 2, and so on.
2. To copy the entire screen, press Command-Control-Shift-3. The screen shot will be placed on your clipboard for you to paste into another program like PowerPoint, Word, Photoshop, etc.
For your info, just in case that you are unaware, you can post the screenshot here in your topic. Click on 'Answer' & then click on the 'Image' [mountain symbol] & follow the instructions.
