Hello Bhuvaneswari & Karthikeyan.
The MalwareBytes' Tech. Support guy did extensive testing on my PC, using their internal tools, and found no malware.
The MalwareBytes' guy said to "disable" the WD nightly backup for several nights, and each morning examine the C-Drive Free Space. If it is still being reduced every night, then that confirms it's NOT the WD backup software…but some "rogue executable" on the WD External Hard Drive that is causing some big files to be written onto the C-drive. I need to find that rogue software & delete it.
I did "disable WD Backup" 1 night ago, and will continue that for several more nights, to learn if it's a WWD Backup-generated problem, or an executable on the EHD that's raising havoc.
And here's some interesting data from "Properties" of files with the exact same names on the 2 Drives:
C-Drive External Hard Drive
Gary Smetana 8.96 GB 45,762 files 35.5 GB 1,547,531 files
Windows 14.7 GB 121, 012 file 18.1 GB 108,680 files
Program Files (x86) 2.2 GB 5,459 files 118 GB 105,960 files
Massive extra copies of files must have been made on the WD EHD, but WHY ? HOW ? What is the corrective action ?
Any recommendations for my next steps ?
Gary
Hello Gary,
This may happen if the files have been moved to the external drive instead of creating a backup. I suggest you to backup the file and check if those file (backed-.
up) is shows in the C Drive. Regarding the FMW function on your other post, it is a framework service which helps in loading the AVG User Interface.
Please update the status.
Every night, I have automated backups of the C-Drive, where all files & folders are copied to my Western Digital 2 TB External Hard Drive. These backups are very dependable; there's been no problem. And I've verified that the newest file updates of selected files have been transferred to the WD Ext. Hard Drive.
THE PROBLEM: The Free Space on the C-Drive is REDUCED EACH NIGHT by approx. 1 GB.
Today, that Free Space is 396.2 GB. A month ago, the C-Drive Free Space was 421 GB.
At this rate, the C-Drive will have ZERO Free Space in 2019.

We need to check which files are getting reduced on the C drive. Please refer this article https://www.computerhope.com/tips/tip202.htm and check the status.
Gary, creating backup is different from moving files.
If you move a file from your C drive, it will be erased from C drive and the data will be moved to your external hard drive.
So, if you wish to take backup, you should not move any file, instead run a backup application that is available pre installed in all Windows computer.
We cannot find the moved items, however, you can create a sample folder in C drive, try to move it as you did it for other files and folders.
If the folder gets removed from C drive, it means that you are not running backup instead moving files.
Moving files will stop some applications from working and it is not recommended to do so.
Hello Bhuvan,
You say: "if the files have been moved to the external drive instead of creating a backup"…means that maybe I should check if I or someone transferred files from the C-drive to the Western Digital external hard drive, but I/we did that NOT using the Backup application, but using File Explorer, to move files & folders from the C-drive to the WD Hard Drive ? Do I have that correct ?
And how would I identify files or folders on the External Hard Drive that were moved using that technique ? How would those files STAND OUT to me?
I'm sensing that we're getting closer to solving this.
I appreciate your help.
Gary
We have tried our best to help you. Unfortunately, it didn't worked. In such case, I request you to contact Microsoft Support for further help.
