Hey Alan, No AV product is capable of providing you with 100% protection although AVG are always working 24/7.

My system was recently infected with MyStartSearch, malware which overrides browser settings and constantly sends you to a 'new' default homepage. AVG did not pick this up, neither at the time of download nor in a ful scan afterward and it does not show up in manual searches of Microsoft or other operating files.
I downloaded trial versions of two removal tools, Spyhunter 4 and Malwarebytes. Both of these, especially the Spyhunter, identified the MyStartSearch infection and claimed to identify multiple other malware and spyware threats. The Spyhunter demands money upfront before cleaning the system, Malwarebytes offers a free version that identifies and cleans.
Since running these, there have been no more diverts to the MystartSearch 'homepage' but I still can't be sure my system is not compromised by this or other infections.
Are the commercial malware programmes effective or even necessary (the Microsoft community website suggests otherwise) or will AVG fully protect my privacy?
Thanks for any opinions.
John
