My AVG icon shows an exclamation mark

Hello David,
Thank you for contacting us and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused. Please note that the exclamation mark is due to turning off the email scanner feature. As you have turned it off intentionally, please ignore the exclamation mark on the AVG tray icon.
Please, feel free to let us know if you require any further assistance.

I have AVG Internet Security, paid, with six different version numbers which I will not copy here, installed on Windows 8.1. My AVG icon now shows an exclamation mark in a circle. When I hover over it, I get the tool tip "Error - Click for more info". Clicking only opens the AVG dialog box, which shows no error other than that I turned off email checking (AVG has a bug that prevents email checking from working correctly, so I turned off this feature). I have not disabled AVG updates.

The AVG dialog box indicates that I am protected from malware in every way except for email, which is what I want.

There are no hints as to how I can turn off this error notification. I will not reinstall Windows as part of a fix. If this is a problem with AVG itself, I am willing to reinstall AVG.
