My data usage counter stopped working after Android system update

I did the recent Android system update to version 7.0 and now the data usage counter doesn't work anymore. It just says 0 bites used, which is definitely not true.
I cant seem to update this app and even reinstalling it doesn't seem straightforward as the app seems to have system app privileges and I'm not sure how to get around that. Any help appreciated.
