Frances, If you are using Win 8 or later version Windows Defender was re-classified to an AntiVirus prog which can conflict with AVG.

Thanks for reply Alan. I should have said that I am ising Windows 7. but what do I have to do to stop the conflict! Please bear in mind I am not very technical, but can follow instructions if they are simplified!
Really appreciate your help.

Windows action centre and defender are turned off. On defended I am getting a message   "you are using a program for harmful or unwanted software, and error code 0x800704 ec.  how do I rectify this?
