Thank you for the quick reply. It happens that I learned how to solve this from a web site or forum. I visited several and now cannot remember which one had the answer, but here is the general idea in case others have the same problem.
In each case I was getting my URL from a web site that was somehow alterning the URL. In one case, a friend's blog site posted as part of his Facebook profile. The URL shows correctly, but there is somehow a very complicated link, altered by Facebook for their own reasons, underlying the one that shows. AVG (recently?) has been fussier about letting me through this tangled mess- I think this started after a recent update. I found that if I copied the visible text and pasted that into a new tab, the web site opened up just as it should. Another site was producing the same error yesterday, and again it was related to clicking a link from another web site. I recall now that I finally got in by typing the real URL myself. Thanks again for your help!
Hello Ted,
I understand the inconvenience. Please disable AVG temporarily (right click on AVG icon in system tray and turn off the protection) and check the status.
This happens with both Chrome and Firefox browsers, so AVG is the primary suspect. The sites I can no longer access are large popular sites that I have visited numerous times.
I believe both browsers, Windows 10, and AVG Internet Security report that they are up to date.
Thanks-
