Hello Jan,
I'm sorry to hear about this, I request you to uncheck "Enable AVG self protection module" (open AVG Internet Security > menu > settings > troubleshooting > uncheck "Enable AVG self protection module" > click OK) and check if your CPU usages decrease. Also I request you to repair AVG protection (http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-repair-AVG), update (open AVG Internet Security > menu > settings > update) it one more time and reboot your computer once. After reboot, please check if your AVG program and CPU usages are working fine.
Best regards,
Alok.
Good day. AVG updated automatically within the last few days. Since then, without scanning, my CPU is running at 92% to 100%, although no other programs or applications are running.
Can this be fixed?
t slows my computer down to the point where I cannot work properly.

Hi Alok
Thank you, I have tried all you said. After I unchecked "Enable AVG self protection module", my CPU went back to normal. I then ran the repair, and also updated AVG again. I then restarted, and checked "Enable AVG self protection module" again to see whether it will work, but no, the CPU went through the roof again, so I unchecked it again.
Will this open my computer to attacks etc?
