Not protected when I boot up laptop

This should not be happening as AVG Anti Virus Free will be automatically activated when you Turn On your computer.

I have basic, antivirus free protection on Windows 7 laptop. Recently I have found that when I start up the laptop the computer is not protected from virus'. I have to go into AVG and fix it which happens straight away. It should be protected automatically as soon as I boot up - how can I get round this?
