Many thanks for the swift reply - it seems I hadn't found the right screen. I have now found the right screen and tried to set up it up as described but without success.
I'm afraid I don't have the time to mess about any more so will just do without this function.

I'm getting a popup saying AVG can't scan emails because they are encrypted and referring me to http://www.avg.com/gb-en/faq.num-4447
The instructions there do not correspond with my product (AVG anti-virus 2015) so I cannot carry them out.
What should I do?
Very hard to get help so I'm not yet persuaded to renew AVG when it comes up in April!!!
