On the FreeAVG 2014 update that ran on 19 May, my Win XPsp3 PC rebooted to a "NTLDR is missing" message. What happened? Has this been a singular error, or has it just not been reported?

hummmm I suppose I should say "thank you Alan", though the answer provided is less than helpful! Sorry, don't want to trash talk, but I haven't found a similar question anywhere else and I'm working off a limited resources laptop that keeps going into orbit. Patience, patience! By the way, I have no idea on how to 'move' the question to the right place. So, if you do, by all means move it, as long as it remains alive for others to see.

I've read a number of suggestions as to what should happen to resolve the problem, but I had thought that I'd let the 'cause' know! You know just in case nobody else has (something all too common these days).

Hi Noel,

Please note that this issue is not connected to AVG.

"This problem may occur if the MFT root folder is severely fragmented. If the MFT root folder contains many files, the MFT may become so fragmented that an additional allocation index is created. Because files are mapped alphabetically in the allocation indexes, the NTLDR file may be pushed to the second allocation index. When this occurs, you receive the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

Typically, files are not written to the root folder. This condition may occur if a program regularly creates and removes temporary files in the root folder, or if many files are copied to the root folder by mistake."

You should find solution in this Microsoft article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320397/EN-US).

Thanks

Noel, You've posted your query in the wrong area! It should have been located here (https://support.avg.com/answers#!/feedtype=RECENT&dc=Windows&criteria=ALLQUESTIONS).

I now have to find the solution and repair my system. Not helpful this.

Sorry Noel, There's no facility on the new Community to move a posting. Just re-post in the correct area which is actually a location where your posting is more likely to be seen anyway. Also AVG experts in Brno will eventually see your issue & answer (http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=190509).
