Hi Stephen,
We understand your concern
We'd suggest you to take advantage of our free remote assistance to investigate further on this, by following the steps in the email that has been sent to you.
Thank you.
I have changed the DNS settings in my router to point to OpenDNS but it seems my MBP running AVG does not honor the settings of the router and there seems to be no way to turn off whatever AVG is doing with my DNS in the application UI.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused, Stephen
We suggested for the remote session only to have a further more understanding of your issue.

NO, you do not get remote access to my system.
Tell me how to disable this feature in your product !
NO, I want all my DNS to go through the Open DNS and NOT your software / DNS.
If you browse here https://welcome.opendns.com/
it will tell you if you gothere using Open DNS
It works on a machine wihtout AVG and does not work on a Mac with AVG installed.
It really is that simple … please escallate this to someone that knows what I am talking about immediately
This isn't the experience we want you to have, Stephen.

Kindly add the the openDNS URL to the exception and check if you are able to access in the Mac with the AVG.
