Outlook 2010 messages close when selecting 'next unread message'

Using AVG Free Edition 2014, with MS Office 2010 on Win 7 (32) (SP1).

Everything seems OK, except that, when browsing emails in Outlook 2010, when I try to view the next unread email - the window closes! I open mails in their own windows, and use either the buttons at the top of the ribbon or 'Ctrl-<' and 'Ctrl->' to view the next unread / read email - but since installing AVG Free Edition, when I do this, the window closes - and I must open the new email again. It's very annoying!

Strangely, I seem to be able to view read mails as described above - only new (unread) email windows are closed when I try to view them. This disrupts my workflow.

How can I solve this annoyance?
