I am an AVG Ultimate user. I use Office 365, Outlook for communications. Lately, my Contacts have pick up a strange infection. On many contacts, the e-mail address has the following added wording in the address: @SMTP@
As a consequence, the email is not delivered. Even trying to repair the Contact is not possible

We aren't sure why this is appearing. Did you check this with Microsoft support?
In general, deep virus scan of AVG will take time as it does thorough scanning.
