Outlook hanging when trying to download e-mails with attachments

I use Outlook on Windows 10 and everytime I receive an e-mail with an attachment (especially a large attachment) I can't get it to download to my inbox, it just hangs the program. I can get them from the server (virgin media) but not being very techy I wondered if it was an Outlook setting or and AVG issue (that I can do smoething about).
Any clues for help/where to start?
