Thank you, Alan. To update the original query, removing Zone Alarm Free Firewall did not solve the problem; however, I have not (yet) had a "page fault" blue screen since removing AVG 2014 Free, which suggests this may be the right place to be seeking help.
Up until recently, I have run Zone Alarm Free Firewall together with AVG 2014 Free with no problems. Two weeks ago, I started getting Blue Screen of Death error 0x00000050 ("Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area"). Since I already had a minor problem with my motherboard, I assumed it was related to that and have built a new pc. Only the SSD has been carried over to the new build and Samsung reports this to be healthy and fully up to date, as does Windows. The rest of the hardware is completely different and many of the drivers will have changed.
I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 x64, AVG 2014 Free (version 2014.0.4744) and Zone Alarm Free Firewall yesterday. However, I am still getting intermittent machine hangs (unrecoverable) due to "Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area", but now without the blue screen. (Bluescreenview finds no record of a bluescreen.) Since the SSD appears healthy and I am using completely different RAM/hardware but getting the same problem, I am going to start by assuming the problem is related to either firewall, antivirus or the combination of the two. I have cleaned off all traces of Zone Alarm using the Zone Alarm cleanup tool and am now running AVG 2014 Free (2014.0.4744) with Windows Firewall to see if this helps.
However, as this is potentially a tough problem to figure out because of the lack of blue screen minidumps, I'd appreciate some preliminary advice. Specifically,
1. I can't see many recent bluescreen postings for AVG 2014 Free, but if I've missed a known problem I'd appreciate a pointer.
2. What information will I need to collect if the problem continues to freeze the machine but not bluescreen it? Are there any checks I can run now, while the machine is seemingly working ok for a few hours, to collect helpful data? I'd consider installing the relevant tools now, in case things get worse. Having them installed ready would reduce the amount I need to stress the machine.
Thank you for any suggestions.
Hi B,
In order to analyze it please provide us with diagnostic output using this tool (http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_SysInfo.exe) and please add detailed description of issue.
Thanks
